Southeastern Guide Dog's Twenty fifth Annual Walk-a-Thon Coming In March!

It’s time to take the Labrador shuffle on the road again. And I just can’t wait to get on the road again. The life I love is raising money for my friends, and I can’t wait to get on the road again. Forgive me Willie! But I just can’t help myself.

The gift Southeastern Guide dogs and their supporters gave to me back in 2003 is still as unbelievable to me today as it was all those years ago. And my desire to continue paying forward is still as strong as ever.

My guide dog, Lucky, is nearly ten years old now. I’ve followed, very strictly, the advice given me by the school and to this day Lucky is an incredibly healthy, high spirited, passion driven hard working service dog who loves nothing more than putting on his harness and getting me around to all the places in my town, my country, my world!

Lucky and I have traveled thousands of miles in eight years and with the grace of God it will be many more years and many more miles before I need to return to Southeastern for a new guide.

Right now though, there are still many blind men and women who have not yet received their first guide, and many who are now ready for a new one.

Southeastern Guide Dog School, Inc. (SEGDI) receives NO money from your tax dollars. All of the money it takes to raise and train the dogs, house the humans while they

Coyote: A Novel of Interstellar Exploration by Allen M. Steele

The story opens in the year 2070. At some point after the present time and before the beginning of this novel America has been fighting revolutions. On it’s own soil. Again. In 1776 British colonists who had fled religious oppression and settled the new world rebelled against King George III and England. Then the revolution known as the civil War, or, the War Between the States. The South rebelling against the North and the oppression of the industrial north over the agricultural south. The northern army was led by General Ulysses S. Grant. And the South was led by General Robert E. Lee. Lee surrendered to Grant in Appomattox in April 1865 and for the next two hundred years, America struggled to rebuild herself. Resentment of the north by the south did not dissipate entirely though. America continued to struggle with prejudice and anger and while it seemed for a time the wounds had been healed, we discover in this novel what could happen if those wounds manage to remain open and continue to fester.

In “Coyote: A Novel of Interstellar Exploration”, the first of two books in the “coyote Rising” series which first debuted in the Isaac Asimov science fiction magazine, author Allen M. Steele explores in a must read science fiction thriller, an America torn apart by another revolution. The country is fragmented, and a new socialist government is installed.

In spite of the social upheaval, scientists and astronomers have continued the exploration of space under the thumb of an oppressive and brutal government. Far away, in a distant corner of deep space, they have discovered a universe that contains a small planet that has the possibility of supporting human life.

The new United Republic of America wants to be the first to reach this new planet and claim it for the expansion of socialism to the far reaches of space.

To accomplish this in an economy already on the brink of collapse after decades of war, the government turns it’s back on the masses and pours trillions of dollars into the development of a star ship capable of traveling a distance of 46 light years and carrying with it a crew of government controlled scientists, engineers and civilian colonists to claim coyote, the name given the planet in question, for the U.R.A. .

a band of freedom fighters with the resolve of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and the other leaders of the first American revolution refuse to capitulate and soon a group of people born into a generation where it seems the south has risen again from the ashes of the civil war, led by Robert E. Lee, great grandson of the famous General of the confederacy hijack the United Republic Star ship Alabama, with it’s on board shuttle the URSS Jessie Helms and URSS George Wallace, taking over a mission that was supposed to spread socialism to far and distant galaxies and instead turn the mission into a flight for freedom.

Captain Robert E. Lee, commander of the URSS Alabama is the mastermind of a complex and secret plan to preserve freedom. He, along with several other high ranking government officials who secretly dream of the old America, have decided to commandeer the starship and replace the government controlled colonists with a band of free thinking civilian scientists, engineers, doctors and educators who have been labeled dissident intellectuals by the government with hopes of turning coyote into a land of the free and a home for the brave.

The more people that are involved in a conspiracy proportionately increases the risk of detection and betrayal. And there are a good many people involved in this conspiracy. The captain, the chief science officer, shuttle pilots, scientists and engineers who developed the technology that made the starship possible and many more. And with each of these participants, the level of suspense as the critical moment draws near is honest to goodness edge of your seat non stop page turning stuff.

Will they succeed? Will freedom fly or will socialism continue to strangle the hope and dreams of people who once lived free? Or will there plans be thwarted simply because too many people have to be involved for a hijacking of this magnitude.

This novel is a captivating and plausible combination of science fiction, political fiction, social fiction adventure, daring and even a little romance.

The author does a superb job of weaving high tech and low tech together in a seamless tapestry that will leave you spellbound. this book is nothing like Star Trek, Star Wars, The Jetsons or Lost In Space. It is real. Or I should say, it seems real. Check it out and see for yourself. Thinking really is the best way to travel!

Ever since the Dutch arrived on the North American shores of the Atlantic Ocean in the early seventeenth century, and began the chain of events which many say swindled the Algonquin, Iroquois and Lenape native American Indians out of their ancestral homelands, The region we know as New York has been the progenitor of many amazing things. Chief, (no pun intended), among them, in the middle part of the twentieth century, in Forest Hills, Queens, New York City, the emergence of Tom and Jerry, who would one day make a permanent and indelible mark on the soundscape of the American folk, country, jazz and rock music scene, equal to the impact of the Europeans on the landscape.

Paul Frederick simon was born on October 13, 1941 in Newark, New Jersey. His mom, Bella, and his papa Louis, both of Jewish and Hungarian ancestry, were the kind of folks you would imagine could produce such a son. Paul’s mom was an elementary school teacher, and his dad, also known on the music circuit as Lee Sims, was a bassist, dance band leader and college professor. Louis “Lee Simms” Simon was one of the first musicians in Hungary to have his music broadcast over the new fangled wireless radio.

Across the river, in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, Arthur Ira Garfunkel was born a few weeks later on November 5^th, 1941. Art’s mom and dad, Rose, a housewife, and Jacob Jack, a traveling men’s clothing salesman, Garfunkel were fine working folks whose parents had migrated from Romania seeking among other things, I suspect, freedom to practice their Jewish faith in the new world. While Art’s parents had no musical background per se, Art has recalled to interviewers in the past that his mom and dad both sang a lot and inspired their son to do likewise.

Over the years, Art and Paul have reunited on stage and my favorite is The concert In Central Park. The Live In New York City 1967 is memorable as it is just Paul playing his Martin and singing with Art providing those unimaginable tight vocal harmonies . Becoming New Friends

So these two kids, Paul and Art , who still had not met, each decide to have a go at tryouts for the PS 164 in Queens graduation play, “Alice In Wonderland”. Art got the part of the Cheshire Cat and Paul got the part of the White Rabbit. I’m guessing it was an awkward, yet somehow affable meeting of these two future superstars. And now that they have become new friends, they are, though unbeknown to either, on the path to becoming “Old Friends”.

First Recording Contracts

It happened in 1957. The two had been gigging around school dances and the like, doing their imitation of The Everly Brothers. Paul and Art certainly had the vocal skills for executing the tight vocal harmonies of their favorite big time stars. Under the name of Tom and Jerry, Art and Paul signed their first recording contract with Big Records and recorded their first single “Hey Schoolgirl”.

Becoming Old Friends

Pablo Picasso told an interviewer once that “it takes a long time to become young”. And we all know it takes a long time for people to become old friends. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel’s stint as a duet has seen it’s share of breakups and reunions. They first broke up in 1959, got back together in 1963, broke up in 1964, got back together in 1965, broke up again in 1970, got back together on several occasions during the seventies and early eighties for reunion tours, got back together once in 1983 to record a new studio album, a project that led to another breakup before the album was released, (Art’s bits were stripped from the master tapes and the album was released as “Hearts and Bones”, a solo album by Paul), back together again three times during the nineties, and several times here in the 21^st century. A tour scheduled for right now, summer 2010, has been postponed due to a problem Art his having with his vocal chords. The duo said they were postponing the show out of respect for their fans. Art’s doctors say a full recovery is very likely.

So after nearly five decades, Paul and Art, who first met at that elementary school play in 1953 have indeed become old friends.

A Review of “Holmes On the Range”, or “I Read My First Holmes On the Range Mystery and Am completely Charmed by Steve Hockensmith’s Yarn Spinning and Tale Telling Methodology”

Meet Gustav “Old Red” and Otto “Big Red” Amblingmeyer. The most unlikely pair of detectives you are likely to run up on should you find yourself somehow drawn back through the mists of time into the great wide open western regions of the United States during the 1890’s.

The brothers, part of a large family of German immigrants and raised by strict Lutheran parents find themselves alone in the world when their Pa and older brothers are taken by small pox and then a few years later, their Ma and little sisters taken by floods that wiped the Kansas plains clean of every evidence of life, including the very grave markers of their Pa and brothers.

While Big Red, the younger brother, has had the good fortune to have had some book learning thanks to the insistence of his Ma and sacrifices of his siblings, Old Red’s only education has been that of a cowboy, working herds, riding rails and rounding up lost doggies for cattle ranchers in Kansas and Wyoming.

It was while Old Red was away working a distant cattle ranch that the floods that devastated the plains left Otto, Big Red, alone in the world. Gustav receives word of his Ma and little sisters tragic deaths and heads back to Kansas to round up his little brother whom he tells with little fanfare and not much apparent sorrow, although his heart was indeed broken, that Big Red needs to pack up his war bag. They have jobs waiting for them in Montana.

Entertainment was a little harder to come by a hundred and twenty years ago than it is today. Yes little buckaroos, no TV, movies, radio, mp3 players, nothing except a few books and magazines. Ok, there were saloons and dance hall girls, but remember, our characters have had a strict Lutheran upbringing.

So one day Otto finds a copy of Harpers Weekly and begins reading stories from it out loud to Gustav in the evening as they sit around the campfires. The magazine featured detective stories. Several of those stories were written by the venerable Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The creator of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. The first story Otto read to Gustav was “The Big Red League”. And Gustav, after insisting Otto re-read the story a couple or three dozen times over, began memorizing phrases and mannerisms of “the man” Sherlock Holmes and was hooked. Old Red didn’t have much of a formal education, in fact, he had no education at all. This did not mean he was an “idjit”. Quite the contrary. Gus had a keen mind and a real knack for the somewhat scientific art of deducification that would have impressed Mr. Holmes.

Within the first couple chapters of this mostly comical , somewhat tragic, occasionally harrowing story, our heroes have landed jobs on the Bar B R, a cattle ranch owned by some high saluting’ English lords and soon find themselves in the center of a murder, or two, or three, back handed dealing and bullying by over zealous range bosses.

When the second body is discovered, Gustav manages to convince the English owner that foul play may be a foot and a wager between the duke and his wanna be cowboy son give Gustav the opportunity he needs to put the techniques of the man, Sherlock Holmes, to work.

A Quick Note for My Friends at ABF and An Invitation for You To Join us!

Sitting at my desk on a Sunday evening studying next weeks lesson, thinking about Monday morning and work and King Solomon and Ecclesiastes .

I have been blessed most of my life when it comes to jobs. Oh, there were a couple jobs that seemed like they had been cursed by someone or something, and few though they were , the really bad jobs certainly helped me develop a better appreciation for the really good ones I have had.

I have enjoyed so many the things I have been able to do to earn a living. From wiping windows, checking oil and pumping gas back when it was 49 cents a gallon to building and flying planes to a great career in the information technology arena, starting at the ground floor and riding the information crest on into the twenty first century. And even though I lost my sight somewhere along the way, (a reward is being offered for it’s safe return by the way,) I very much enjoy the work I now do in showcasing the unique challenges faced by the blind and visually impaired on a world wide band box, helping where I can, promoting guide dogs in general and SEGDI in particular and sharing musical visions with you. As for the work I do selling artists work, it’s a labor of love. And if I’m lucky, I might even make a buck or two.

Sadly though, I have been lacking in the used of the work arena to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. So here’s a humble effort at it.

For my friends at ABF, I will make available to you electronically, if you would like them, our upcoming lesson text, references and my notes. And I’ll share some of my favorite Christian recording artists work. Something to get us in the right frame of mind.

Having trouble getting your old ActionTec dsl modem/wireless router to work peacefully with your new NetGear wireless router? Here’s a brief recounting of how I got through this obstacle and subsequently connected multiple wireless devices successfully.

The Two Routers

1ActionTec Verizon DSL Modem/Wireless Router

NetGear 614 Wireless Router

IP address to access either router . is 192.168.1.1

Use the above IP to access the ActionTec

Use http://routerlogin.net to access the NetGear

Wiring as follows

Patch from ActionTec to NetGear with Internet signal. Patch from NetGear to PC1. PC2 is wired to Action Tec.

To access the ActionTec, type 192.168.1.1 into a web browser from either PC1 or PC2. The default username/password for the ActionTec is ADMIN/Password

To access the NetGear router software I first turned off the ActionTec. This of course disrupts the internet connection, but still allows communication with the router from PC1

From PC1 enter routerlogin.net

The default username/password is ADMIN/Password

Under Wireless Setup turn on WEP security, generate a new 128bit WEP Key. Also give the router a unique SSID. Since my ActionTec is using channel 9, I set the NetGear to channel 11.

/saved changes and turned the ActionTec back on.

Created connections in each of the two mobile devices as required.

Alls well that end well.

The walk takes place in Palmetto, Florida, at the Manatee County Fairgrounds on Saturday, February the 27^th, 2010.

Little Feat – The Featured Artist for the Week of Rocktober 17 – 24, 2009

Dateline Los Angeles, 1969

Today, (in history that is), in L.A. singer and guitarist Lowell George from Hollywood,

California and Bill Payne, piano player and singer from Waco, Texas, joined forces

with Roy Estrada, from Santa Anna, California on bass guitar and Ritchie Hayward

from Clear Lake, Iowa on drums to form a new soon to be legendary band. The four

young men and some friends were sitting around jamming and trying to come up with

a name for the new group. Worn out from pacing round the room, Lowell George,, who

has recently been fired by Frank Zappa kicked back in a chair and propped his feet

up on the table. “Check out those little feet” said someone in the room. The rest,

as they say, is history. It was no small feat that brought together George, Payne,

Estrada and Hayward. The spelling of the singer’s

little feet was not in homage to the feat accomplished, Rather, it was in homage

to The Beatles.

Hard to believe it's been forty years since that first press release announcing the creation of Little Feat. It is true Linda Lou. And the band is still working hard. Time loves a hero, also true, but time is slowly but surely taking it's toll. With the recent diagnosis of a rather serious liver disease forcing Ritchie Hayward to take an unplanned sabbatical it seems that the mind making promises the body can't fill is becoming more than just a prelude to the old folks boogie. Our prayers are with Ritchie for a full and speedy recovery. And for Bill, Paul, Fred, Kenny, Gabe and Sam as they continue to give this old dreamer, and many of you too, sight through music.

Hello Friends of Music for Sight,

The Open House at Southeastern, Lucky’s alma mater, is only two weeks away. You asked me for a reminder, and here it is!

Open House Saturday, October 24th!

Attention, dog and puppy lovers come to our next Open House!

Southeastern Guide Dogs will host its next Open House on Saturday, October 24th from

9 a.m. to noon at its beautiful, 23-acre campus in Palmetto. The event is free and

open to the public!

Open House visitors will enjoy a guided, walking tour of our Freedom Walk and our

puppy and dog training kennels and will have the opportunity to visit with our adorable

puppies. You will learn how guide dogs are trained and the valuable service they

provide. Get an opportunity to experience what it's like to walk blindfolded with

a trained dog.

Southeastern Guide Dogs is one of only 10 fully certified guide dog schools in the

country, and the only guide dog school in the Southeastern United States. The school

is just minutes off I-75 at 4210 77th Street East in Palmetto.

So that you won't think we are always doing the old folks boogie here at Music for Sight, I'm stepping aside this week and letting my youngest contributor, Ethan "Guitar Man" Bowen take over the featured artist spotlight and shine it where he will.

He has decided on Guns and Roses. A raucous hard rock band from L.A. that critics liken to the early raucous rock and roll of the Rolling Stones.

Axl Rose and his band have been through some changes, and after a bit of time off, they have come back determined to re-establish themselves as one of America’s hard rock front runners. with a new album called Chinese Democracy.

From their 1987 debut, Appetite for Destruction, through the 2008 release, the band has never been short on high energy rock...

The Piano Player Emerges

A few years later around 1954 Reggie began taking formal piano lessons. In spite of the fact, or maybe because of the fact that the lessons were formal and his dad, a stern disciplinarian who enforced a constrictive home life, by 1956, when Reggie heard those first Elvis Presley and Bill Haley records his mom brought home, knew that he wanted to play like that! Wild, free and unconstrained. I think we call it rock and Roll, eh?

They say by age 11 Reggie was dazzling the aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, friends and anyone nearby with his Jerry Lee Lewis like performances. Imagine having a kid like that playing at the family holiday parties!

Reggie won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Arts and was, according to his instructors a model student who could listen to a recital of say a four page Handel composition just once, and then play it back from memory sounding like a recording in his flawless execution. Years later, Reggie would say he was a bit of a rebel during those days, but his teachers don't remember it that way. Ah, memories, like beauty, are so often as recalled, or seen by the beholder...

Reggie left school at 17, formed a band called The Corvettes and then a band known as Bluesology. It was with Bluesology, who soon became the backup band for local legend Long John Baldry, he recorded his first two singles, and, answering an ad in a local music rag after failing lead vocal auditions for King Crimson and Gentle Giant, met Bernie Taupin.

His dad, concerned by all this craziness, tried to steer young Reggie to a more conservative future, like, say, banking. I’m not sure how the loss of another banker has hurt the financial world, but can you imagine a world without the music and magic of Elton John? I can’t.

Reggie changed his name to Elton John in honor of the sax player in Bluesology whose name was Elton Dean, and Long John Baldry.

Elton John Releases His First U.S. Album, Empty Sky

Elton John began wearing the oversized glasses in emulation of another rebel, James Dean, and began dressing in wild stage getups to strike a visual impact. Like the audio impact was not enough.

Then in 1969, Elton John, with several players from Bluesology and lyrics by Bernie Taupin, released his first U.S. album Empty Sky.

This Weeks eatured Artist - Dan Fogelberg

Our featured artist for the week of September 23 - September 30, 2009 is a true blue
American legend. Born and raised in Peoria Illinois, Dan was learning to play a
guitar starting in his 14
th
year and given to him by his grandpa by using a Mel Bay chord book. Just like the
one I used, and maybe you too! Dan's musical heritage is rich in talent. His mom,
Margaret a classically trained pianist and his dad, Lawrence, the high school band
leader immortalized in Dan's classic song "Leader of the Band", from his 1981 two
record album "The Innocent Age", endowed Dan with skills and talents that would day
make him, indeed, an American legend.
Dan Fogelberg died at his home in Deer Isle, Maine on December 16, 2007 with his
wife by his side. Dan had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but that diagnosis
came to late for successful treatment. Dan's last with was for his wife to do what
she could using his fame to prevent other men from the same fate.
Dan's final album, released this week is being used to help make Dan's last request
possible. All proceeds from the sale of this CD, from here at Music for Sight and
from Dan's own web site,

Southeastern Guide Dog school Announces Memorial Garden

The campus of Southeastern Guide Dog School is located in Palmetto, Florida, a
small town south of Tampa. The campus is about 3 or 4 miles from the town of Palmetto
in a rather secluded area. The grounds of the campus are large and beautifully landscaped.
And in a quiet corner of the grounds a new Memorial Garden is being installed to
give us all a private area to memorialize and remember the amazing guides who gave
everything of themselves and asked nothing of us in return except to love them.
Here is an excerpt from the email I received from Southeastern. , "Located in the
southwest corner of the Southeastern Guide Dogs campus, this garden
is a quiet, contemplative spot. Features include opportunities to memorialize a beloved
dog in a beautifully landscaped area.
The garden is visually segregated from surrounding areas and offers the fragrance
of Florida flowers and a unique sense of peaceful remembrance of a dog that has a
special place in your heart. Opportunities for memorials of your dog include bricks,
river rocks and benches.
